Become a Mason
How do I become a Mason? The short answer is ask a Mason. There is a misconception that to be come a Mason, a Mason has to invite you. A Mason will NEVER ask you to join. You must come to Freemasonry of your own accord.
So, now that you have decided you want to become a Mason, what are the steps?
- Contact your local Lodge. In Texas, you can use this Lodge Locator.
- You need to fill out a petition. You can either stop by a Lodge and ask for one or you can download one here.
- Submit your petition with any additional documentation. In Texas you have to submit a copy of your birth certificate or passport.
- Your petition will be read at the next Stated Meeting.
- You will be interviewed by a few Brothers so that the Lodge can learn about who you are. This is also another chance for you to ask about Freemasonry.
- Your petition will then be voted upon at the next Stated Meeting.
- If you receive a favorable vote. A member of the Lodge will contact you to arrange for you to receive the Entered Apprentice degree.
Once you receive your EA degree, there are 2 more degrees. They are the Fellowcraft(2nd) and Master(3rd). To progress to these degrees, you will have to prove a proficiency in the preceding degree.
After you have been raised to a Master, the choice is yours where to go. Some Brothers choose to focus their entire Masonic life in the Blue Lodge. While many Brothers will also join one of the appendant bodies. They are the Scottish Rite, Shriners, and York Rite. To join one of these, you must be a Master Mason.
